Ending the year on the highest of notes!

Earlier this week we received some amazing news from Sydney, Australia where our flagship Baccō Estate Red Blend 2020 won a coveted best-in-class trophy at the Global Fine Wine Challenge. What makes this international achievement even more remarkable, is that the winning wine came up trumps in a very competitive category in only its second vintage.

The annual Global Fine Wine Challenge, formerly the Six Nations Wine Challenge, is accessible by invitation only to the top 120 wines of the New-World producer countries of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and the USA. The judging panel includes some of the most esteemed critics in the global wine industry, including Huon Hooke, Toni Paterson MW, Anthony Mueller, Jane Skilton MW and South Africa’s own Michael Fridjhon.

The Baccō Estate Red Blend 2020 took trophy honours in Class 19 – Bordeaux Blends, with a top score of 97 out of 100 from the judges. This is an outstanding achievement against some of the highest regarded wines of the New World. South Africa picked up 5 trophy wins & 4 runner-up double gold medals across 19 classes judged.

Our team is beaming from the news. Owner Nathan Jankelowitz says: “In the space of a mere two vintages, our young vineyards under the expert management of Simonit and Sirch have exceeded all expectations. In the cellar, this small crop of ultra-premium fruit is nurtured by the winning duo of winemaker Julia Blaine and consulting cellarmaster Martin Smith into mesmerising expressions of their terroir. We are immensely proud and grateful for this major international recognition.”

And there’s more – the ultimate Platter’s score

The Global Fine Wine Challenge Trophy award comes hot on the heels of another sought-after local plaudit for Baccō’s Red Blend 2020. The recently launched Platter’s SA Wine Guide 2024 awarded it a prestigious 5-star rating, one of only fourteen wines in the Cape Bordeaux category to achieve this rare feat.
